A First Of Many

Humans are believed to have inhabited Britain for 800,000 years. With so much history to account for, it is not surprising that the nation boasts around 2,500 museums.

The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, in Oxford, is an example of just one of these. What makes it remarkable, however, is that having been established in 1683, it is Britain’s first ever public museum. It is named after Elias Ashmole, whose donation of notable objects to the University of Oxford formed its first collection.
